Homecoming 2016: America

in News by

Wesleyan will soon set aside its original green and gold colors and embody the iconic red, white and blue. The countdown for homecoming has already begun, and this year’s theme is the most patriotic of them all: America.

While the week leading up to homecoming will be filled with different themes, allowing students to dress up, Friday’s festivities will be all about America. The Friday breakdown includes, freshmen as the stars and stripes, sophomores as the working class, juniors as American icons and seniors as American celebrities.

In late May of last year, the student government gathered to exchange ideas about homecoming and ultimately finalize their theme decision. Ideas such as Sports and Social Media were sure contenders, but America rose to the top.

In a recent interview with Student Body President, Lauren Alexander said, “I think it was definitely a group decision. We thought that it would be the most fun and the breakdown was really good, and it was just something we could all get excited about.”

Later that summer, the student government assembled once again, this time to create a video that could creatively convey the theme to the entire student body. From Amelia Earhart crossing the Atlantic to the moon landing, the video depicted “defining moments in American history.”

This year’s dance will take place on Oct. 22, one of Wesleyan’s latest to date. While traditions such as the homecoming pageant, pep-rally and parade will remain the same, students can expect new activities as well. “Friday is going to be a lot different this year in a good way and we’re going to have some fun things to do and some new surprises, so just watch out for those,” said Alexander.

While final plans have not been made yet, the student government is working to making this year’s homecoming one of the best.
