One of the most exciting parts of Wesleyan homecoming activities are the theme days. Every year, the student government decides four different theme days for Monday through Thursday and what each grade will wear on the Friday of homecoming week. Student Body President, senior, Lauren Alexander said to decide the different theme days, the student government “compiles individual ideas on a list and then crosses off the ones [they] don’t like until [they] have a small number [they] can vote on.”

The theme days this year were holiday day, tacky day, game day, Disney day and the American themed day in which each grade level was assigned a specific costume. In past years, twin day was always a fan favorite however that is not a theme this year. Alexander says it’s because “people can have a “twin” on any day if they wanted too and we wanted to mix it up for a change.” One of the most fun days this year was Disney day. Costumes that caught special attention were when Senior Sam Laurite and sophomore Kris Laurite dressed up as the before and after versions of Princess Mia from Disney’s “The Princess Diaries.” Sophomore Kris Laurite said “at first we were going to do it as a joke but then ended up doing it and a bunch of people commented on how accurate our costumes were.”

Typically, on Friday, the seniors get the best costume and as you go down in grade level the costumes get worse. The assigned costumes for this year were: freshmen as stars and stripes, sophomores as the working class, juniors as made in America and seniors were American icons. Senior Sam Laurite said, “This year was definitely the best by far. It was tough freshman and sophomore year to dress up along with our themes, like inanimate objects… but then it got better junior year when we could be Sidekicks.”

Homecoming week is a great time for students to get out of their uniforms for a change and wear more enjoyable, comfortable things to school. The theme days are something the students look forward to every year and it always gets them excited for the big homecoming football game as well as the dance.
