Softball Begins Season: One Body With Many Parts

in Sports by

The Lady Wolves have begun their season and are now in full swing. The Wesleyan softball team recently started off their season with two wins from a double header against GACS and Lovett. The scores were 5-0 against GACS and 8-7 against Lovett.

Head softball coach Mary Stephenson said, “Our overall goal is the same from season to season and that is how to learn to be a true reflection of the body of Christ… we talk a lot about being one body and many parts and being able to make sacrifices for the good of the team, so we use softball to understand how to put others above yourself.”

Which One Will it Be: Moe’s, Chipotle, or Willy’s?

in News by

There are three major favorites when it comes to Mexican fast food. Willy’s, Moe’s and Chipotle are a fan favorite at Wesleyan and across the United States. Green and Gold surveyed thirty students from each grade and thirty teachers with the gender count split evenly.

The freshmen preferred Moe’s, sophomores preferred Moe’s, juniors preferred Moe’s, and seniors preferred Willy’s. The faculty preferred Willy’s as well. The survey gave insight on which Mexican fast food place was each grade’s favorite, even if it was a small percentage of the class. This applied to the teachers as well with their vote and preference counting just as much as the students.

First in line is Moe’s Southwest Grill. Junior and Moe’s enthusiast Ryan Gomes said, “During the summer I usually go about four times a week and the best part about Moe’s is their salsa bar, queso and their special greeting, Welcome to Moe’s!!”

Water Polo: Don’t Tread on the Wolves

in Sports by

Amid the other fall sports, water polo has returned for their 2017 season. Winning one of their matches already, the team promises an exciting season. With a great track record for success, senior Grant Beaty predicted that they are “headed to the state championship.” The team has earned high praise in their past for their notable track record.

Starting off their season with one win out of their first six matches is highly impressive for a team that, due to time and venue restrictions, is only capable of limited practice. Senior Grant Beaty said they have games two to three times a week and practice “two to three times a year.” Coach Kevin Kadzis mentioned what the course of the season will entail and talked about what makes water polo the increasingly popular sport it is. There is a lot of buzz surrounding the distinguished team this season. “We have a pretty challenging schedule given the nature of club sport,” said Kadzis, “But I’m most interested in how we improve as individuals and how we improve to play together as a team.”

Wesleyan Football Works Hard, Dreams Big

in Sports by

Last season, Wesleyan football had a seemingly straightforward goal: Go to the Dome and win. This season, the same goal remains.

2008 marked the last time Wesleyan football held up the State Championship trophy. Last season, a move to Class A private opened the door to a state championship run. However, the Wolves were stopped short of their goal in the Elite Eight by eventual state champions Eagles Landing Christian Academy. While the Wolves undoubtedly had the skill, heart and game plan to succeed, they were simply outmatched by ELCA that night. The Wolves are certainly looking forward for their Sept. 29 rematch against the Chargers.

In the off season, the team worked extremely hard to gain the weight and physical strength necessary to compete at the highest levels. Coach Dustin Wolf gave players a SAGE lunch guide which helped them gain the necessary nutrients, protein and calories to gain muscle, while still maintaining their agility. He said it was important that the team had a “commitment to training in the spring off-season that started in January.”

Cross Country Team Blazes into the New Season

in Sports by

Now that the school year has begun anew, the eruption of fall sports fills the Wesleyan community, and with this eruption comes the new cross country season.

The start of the new season began on July 24 at 8 a.m. when 98 members of the team traveled to Sevierville, Tennessee to the Wilderness in the Smokies Hotel and Indoor Waterpark to undertake three days of hard training and an exorbitant amount of fun.

Each day, all members of the cross country team rose bright and early for a grueling run in mountainous terrain to prepare for the new season ahead. Although there was plenty of difficult training, there was also plenty of opportunities for rest and recovery. This included swimming in freezing rivers, relaxing in Enos, bonding with teammates and riding enormous waterslides.
