Thirty five out of the thirty-six weeks of the Wesleyan school year are filled with countless assessments, Bible papers and piles of homework; Homecoming Week is the one week out of the year where school becomes a little less serious. It is a time where students trade the uniforms for silly costumes and this year, the school went from a normal high school in Georgia to the red carpet in Hollywood.
On Oct. 10, the Senior Leadership Team and a group of volunteers joined forces to create meaningful gifts to give to the facilities team for all of their hard work and dedication.
The facilities team is responsible for maintaining Wesleyan’s beautiful campus. They set up and breakdown events, clean every room in all buildings and more. While keeping a strong work ethic, they make sure to express positivity in everything they do, and they are never seen with attitudes that aren’t always after achieving their golas. Although they are always appreciated it is more difficult for students to see the impact they are making, because many members of the team get to school after the students. After school hours, you will find the team picking up garbage students left behind from a morning snack or they will pick up that crumbled-up test which has 68 in red marker at the top, left behind from a sad student. The work ethic that encompasses the many members of the facilities team is truly awe inspiring, and they are a pure example of what to strive for when wanting to achieve the character trait of hard working.
At Wesleyan School, the Fall Musical was “CHESS” a comedic/dramatic musical that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the show. The show includes a love story, a scandal and much more.
The musical has been referred to as a metaphor for the Cold War, with the insinuation being made that the Cold War is itself a manipulative game. Released and staged at the height of the strong anti-communist agenda that came to be known as the Reagan Doctrine. Chess addressed and satirized the hostility of the international political atmosphere of the 1980s. The plot line of CHESS was about a woman named Florence Vassy, who is a second to the US Chess Champion, Freddie Trumper. Florence has a really rocky past with her mother dying, her father presumed dead, and she is basically alone with herself. Another man named Anatoly Sergievsky, the Russian Chess Champion, goes against Freddie Trumper in the Chess Championship, but also falls in love with Florence Vassy, which causes trouble because he has a wife. Ending the last softball season with a State Championship set the bar high for the 2018 season; however, the Wesleyan Softball season has gone above and beyond with their season so far.
The team kicked off the road to state with a Region Championship win for the sixth year in a row, and they are entering into the state tournament in the first seed. The Wolves defeated Landmark Christian School 7-2 and junior Madison Kerpics pitched the entire games, “while striking out 18 people to earn the win in the circle” (Gwinnett Prep Sports). “Our team really worked together to win the region game. Everyone played well and our ability to work together is what really helped us throughout that game and the season,” said senior Savannah Sommer. The win for the team was impressive, but what came with the win was even better. “After the game, we got new golden cleats as a deal with our coaches, which was almost as great as winning the game,” said senior Jennifer Nolan.
A month before elections, Georgia citizens are involved doing several things: putting yard signs of candidates out in the yard, setting up voting registration, and advertising for their preferred candidate.
The previous election for the House of Representatives was on November 2016 which means there will be an election this year since representatives only have two-year terms. Elections for the House of Representatives will be occurring not just in Georgia, but across the nation.
