Students and faculty share meaning behind verse of the month

March 18, 2026

The Green and Gold chooses a verse for the month for the month of February. This month, the Green and Gold verse of the month this February is Proverbs 3:5–6; “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

The context behind this verse is King Solomon giving his son wisdom on how to live his life in the sense that he is showing him how to live his life through the Lord and with humility and trust in Him without relying solely on world values. The verse follows Solomon as he emphasizes the importance of blessings that come from God’s heart. In this way, “trusting in the Lord with all your heart” is a way for someone to build their entire life on the Lord’s wisdom and “direct thy paths” is a call for all followers of Christ to focus their lives on the betterment of others and the way that God intends for them to live.

When asked about the meaning of this verse, junior Eddie Stivers said, “I think that this verse should mean that it’s important to put trust in the Lord and never waver our trust when it comes to our love for God. When life gets hard, God will always be there for us and he will never leave us.”

People who follow God, according to Stivers, should be trustworthy of Gods focused effort to bring His people together, should be a priority to prevent wavering the sight of differences that could cause division. Although what they may see as crazy or not important, God is using this moment to help them make better decisions. Christians should value the moments where they’re guided by Gods to make valuable choices that will improve lives and the quality of character. Finally, the part of the verse that says trust in God with “all your hearts” should follow through and have complete trust that God is in every aspect of our lives. Followers of Christ strive to be unwavering towards the trust of God’s guidance.

Bible teacher and high school diversity coordinator Adonnis Jules responded to this verse when he said, “The verse itself is from proverbs which in itself is advice from king Solomon who is known as one of the wisest and more spiritually connected kings. Any advice that he gives is for us to follow and is the wisest judgement from God.”

Jules interprets the verse as a way for Solomon to advise not only his son but to anyone who is questioning God’s decisions. Jules said, “I quote this one saying I heard that said “God I may not agree with your methods but I can’t disagree with you results.” Jules determines that the verse is a calling for all those who follow Christ to use his wisdom to help others and to follow the advice of God.

The main value that this verse wants not only the Wesleyan community but followers of the Lord to see is the importance that the teaching of the Lord will bring and Solomons verse where he is telling his son the importance of wisdom trusting in Gods judgement and his faith. Following God with all of our heart is by letting the Lord into everything and allowing his judgement to affect decision making.

Senior Matthew Noble said, “This verse symbolizes the love that God has for us and all who choose to give their heart and soul to Him. When we acknowledge His guidance, all decisions that we make will be for the better. It kind of impacts all of us who choose to use God’s knowledge for our decisions.” Noble uses this verse to say that no matter what happens to those who need guidance, God will always lead them to the right decision. Noble said, “It will always be weird like in terms of the guidance He gives sometimes, but it will always work out for the better.”

The verse of the month this February being Proverbs 3:5-6 is a calling for all according to Stivers, to follow God with all of your heart and you will see the change that he chooses to make in your life. Jules said that God may have odd ways to perform his actions but when he does them, the outcomes are amazing. Stick through the struggle that God places you through and wait for the outcome which is always going to be the best. However, despite both of the two having different opinions, they all agree that the overall message is that God has a purpose for everyone and there is always a method for their future.

Noble agrees with both Stivers and Jules when interpreting the verse. Noble says that God has a plan for everyone even when the plan is a little odd compared to what one may have in mind. Noble and Jules both agree with Jules’ phrase “God I may not agree with your methods but I can’t disagree with your results.”
