NCL Senior Girls: Recognition for Service

Every year, the National Charity League recognizes senior girls and their family for their commitment to improving their community.

According to their website, “NCL Inc. is non-profit national organization of mother and daughter members in Chapters across the United States” (NationalCharityLeague.org). The mission of this organization is for mothers and daughters to develop leadership and cultural awareness with each other.

“Free at last. Free at last. Thank God almighty, we are free at last.” These were the final words in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963.

Dr. King grew up when Jim Crow Laws and segregation were part of the daily life in the United States. He, however, was not satisfied living a life with division and inequality. Dr. King joined the Civil Rights Movement with other African Americans such as Rosa Parks, to raise awareness against discrimination and bring unity throughout the entire country.

NBA Season 2018-2019: Who Will be on Top?

There are three letters that associate LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kyrie Irving together: NBA. This year for the NBA season, the biggest game changer for both the Eastern and Western conference was LeBron James joining Lonzo Ball and the Los Angeles Lakers after several years of playing with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

According to NBA statistics, as of Jan. 15, LeBron James has an average of 27.3 points and an average of 8.3 rebounds per game during his time with the Lakers (ESPN). He, however, is recovering from an injury which does not permit him to play with his team on the court.

Basketball Rebounds into the Winter Season

During the winter season, Yancey Gymnasium is filled with boys and girls playing one sport: basketball. The boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams have worked extremely hard during preseason to prepare for the 2018-2019 season.

Sophomore basketball player, Paige Lyons, said, “During the preseason, the girls’ basketball team spends five days doing open gym. We also do strength and conditioning for a couple of weeks before the season officially starts.”
