Sports are one of the great bridges of today’s society that allow people with uncommon backgrounds to connect with each other for a common purpose. In times of hardship and struggle, they give people hope and a moment of escape and, teach young men and women valuable lessons and principles, such as teamwork, humility, hard work, pride, and sportsmanship. They give people something to be inspired by. Simply put, sports, in their own way, make the world a better place. This brings up the question: What is the response of the world when such an integral part of its culture is stripped away? In recent weeks, almost every popular sports association and league has fallen victim to the outbreak of Covid-19. Thousands of athletes and fans have been relegated to the sidelines for the foreseeable future. This pandemic only seems to be getting worse, which means that the return of many major sports anytime soon seems highly unlikely. In the wake of this, executives, athletes and fans all around the world are discovering creative ways to fill the void.

The mirror is a powerful possession, simply because it has the influence of an inescapable truth: a reflection. When someone gazes into a mirror, there are no edits or touch ups or Photoshop. There is nothing but reality in the form of a reflection, a truth everyone has to come to terms with. Whatever truth is produced through this reflection has massive effects on the human spirit and mind. These effects are magnified even more by what a person carries with them to the mirror. Everyone brings something to the mirror.  The triumph, tragedies, perceptions, perspectives and most importantly, the words that have been seared into them by others.  These emotional and mental weights distort the already mighty reflection, causing a person to become a slave to the mirror and feel despairing to any chances of changing what they see.  For some, this experience is all too real.

Wildfires are a common in occurrence in Australia. In fact, the country experiences its own wildfire season from April until September and local firefighters are able to effectively handle the situation. However, the devastation and destruction inflicted upon the “Land Down Under” this year has made this annual occurrence more than just a season; it is a crisis. The flames have done more than just burn land. They roared over the entire country obliterating homes, habitats, and most importantly, lives. The wildfires are the largest fires Australia has seen in decades and they are only getting worse. It is taking everything within the country’s arsenal to keep the flames at bay. The people of Australia are in for the firefight of a lifetime.

Winning a state championship in any sport is extremely difficult; the chances of winning one is highly improbable, but the odds of being back- to- back as state champions in any sport is nearly impossible. The amount of hard work, effort and dedication and needed is immense. If a team can complete such a feat, they have undoubtedly proven that they are the best in their sport. This is exactly what the Wesleyan boys’ cross country team proved two weeks ago in Carrollton, GA when they won their second straight state championship. They proved that without a doubt, that they are the best runners that the state of Georgia’s 1-A classification has to offer. They are no longer just a good team, they are a great team. They are champions, and they will go down in history for the phenomenal work they have done.

The road to victory for the team began on Nov. 1 during the high school’s senior night pep-rally. At the beginning of the pep rally, the varsity cross country team was welcomed to the middle of the gym floor and was given a standing ovation for a phenomenal season so far. As the Wesleyan fight song blared and thunderous crowd continuously cheered, the team proceeded to run to the buses to head off to the state meet. Once on the bus, the team began their hour-long drive to Carrollton.

It has been over a month since the entirety of Wesleyan participated in the biggest week of the year, Homecoming. It goes without saying that this event is unparalleled in its size and significance to Wesleyan. It is the event that brings the past, present and future of the school together to experience true community and comradery.  It is the event that every student looks forward to each year with great anticipation. It is the event that introduces the freshmen to their high school maturation and begins the seniors send off into college preparation. It is the ambitious, auspicious occasion at the beginning of the year that sets the tone and gives the school enthusiastic inspiration. Homecoming is a memorable affair that every year, gets bigger and bigger.

Homecoming season began with the reveal of its theme and this year’s Homecoming reveal was nothing short of explosive, literally. On the first Monday of the school year, students filed into Austin Chapel with eagerness. They were treated to a viewing of the trailer put together by student government. After watching the trailer, it was revealed to them that the theme for this year would be: “Out of this World.”  A theme that not only encompassed space, stars and planets, but the idea of innovative thinking and imagination. A common idea presented by the entire student government was the concept of not just thinking “out of the box,” but thinking “out of this world” in order to have the greatest school year possible. This concept really resonated with the entire school.
