The Fourth Grade Easter Play: A Wesleyan Tradition

Easter is a right around the corner and that means students, teachers, parents and more will gather to see the Easter story come to life. Every year, fourth grade students in the lower school put on a play that tells the story of Easter from Jesus’ crucifixion to his resurrection. After weeks of rehearsals, students perform this show for family members, faculty and students of all grade levels on March 21st and 22nd.

 
Fourth grade teachers Fiona Owen, Sarah Kate Wilson and Brittany Knight help to put on the play and prepare the students for their roles. Owen said, “In preparation for the Easter Play, we choose parts very carefully to match the students’ preferences. We run lines together in the classroom after watching the previous year’s Easter play production. Finally, we guide the students with stage direction, voice projection, reaction, anticipation of lines and background knowledge.”

Eyeball Day Impresses Students and Faculty

Corneas, pupils and optic nerves are just three of the amazing wonders of the eyeball that were explored during a trip through the eyeball on Wesleyan’s fourth grade Eyeball Day.

Last month, the Wesleyan fourth graders hosted Eyeball Day in the lower school. They decorated one of the rooms as the inside of an eyeball where they gave tours to anyone who wanted to see it and learn about the human eye.

Lower school teacher Megan Rappe said, “We have eyeball day because the fourth graders are studying the structure and function of the eye in science taught by Mrs. Cooper.  Not only do they learn about it but have to figure out how to teach it to others – younger students, high schoolers, and adults.”

Each fourth grader acted as a tour guide to the person they were leading through the eye. Fourth grader, Eli Hewitson, said, “On eyeball day I learned that the kids I toured were very curious about the eye, and I enjoyed that the kids listened to every word that my partner and I said.”

The fourth graders were very informative and knew a wide array of information about the eye. Rappe said that the fourth graders were excited to show off their knowledge to people of all ages.

Everyone who went through the eyeball room was very impressed with the knowledge that the fourth graders portrayed. Rappe said, “My favorite part of eyeball day was watching how comfortable the fourth graders were with the high schoolers and how sweet the high schoolers were with the little ones.  They were very proud of their own efforts.”

 

Christian Life Theme

As we come toward the end of the year, the Christian Life theme starts to hit its main focus. This focus starts with March’s theme, “you are a child of God.” Once a person devotes themselves to Christ, they become a Citizen of Heaven and being a Citizen of Heaven also means you are a child of God.

The verses for the month are John 1:12-13 and Romans 8:14-16. John 1:12-13 reads “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” Romans 8:14-16 “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” Keep Reading

Peer Group Check-In

Peer Groups are a long standing tradition dating back to 2000. The Green & Gold asked a freshmen from each of the twelve groups the following questions to check in on how they have gone so far.

Sophie Parsonnet (Parents: Hannah Peterson & Chris Middleton)-

  1. My favorite part about peer groups is when we do “family” outings together somewhere out of school.
  2. Peer groups has made me reach out to other students in my grade that I may have not talked to as much.
  3. Yes this experience has helped me so much this year because it lets me get to know the seniors better and not be as scared of them as I would be.
