Tennis Teams Start the Season Off Right

in Sports by

Roger Federer and Serena Williams have nothing on Sophia Strickland, Cullen Davis and the rest of our tennis all-stars. The Wesleyan girls and boys tennis teams are working hard this year to make a good run in the State Championship.

After coming off a win in the State Championship last year, the girls tennis team is putting in time and effort in order to once again get their shot at state. Junior, Lauren Alexander, said that her favorite part about playing tennis at Wesleyan is spending time with the team and being able to grow closer.

“My personal goal is to consistently perform for my team so that they can have confidence during their matches,” Alexander said.

Senior, Sophia Strickland, said that Lovett is going to be their toughest opponent this year, but they have already beaten Lovett 3-2, so that is a good sign for the rest of the season. Strickland has been playing tennis for ten years, and this fall, she will be continuing her tennis career at Johns Hopkins University.

The boys tennis team is also working hard to be a contender in the State Championship this year. Junior, Cullen Davis, said that his favorite part about playing tennis at Wesleyan is all of the great facilities that Wesleyan offers for the sport.

Like Strickland, Davis also said that the team’s toughest opponent this year will be Lovett. When asked about a team goal for this year, Davis said, “I would say that a good team goal for this season would be to make the state tournament. Our region is very tough this year and to make the state tournament after coming out of this region would be a very big accomplishment.”

Madness Ensues as Bracketology Begins

How does one billion dollars sound?  The prize for the perfect bracket is worth exactly that, according to Warren Buffet.  March Madness, also known as the NCAA tournament, is gearing up to take place and create a stir among the student body.

Grades are already forming their bracket leagues, testing to see who may pick the most accurate bracket for this year’s tournament.

This NCAA tournament is a 64 team bracket that also includes a four team play in bracket.  Overall, there are 65 games that are played to determine which team will outlast the rest and claim their place in the history books as the 2016 NCAA tournament champion.

This year, Warren Buffet has put his money on the line again with the Billion Dollar Bracket, sponsored by Quicken Loans.  If anyone in the world achieves a perfect bracket, they will win the money.  Sadly for those who are full believers in their bracket, there have approximatley 1 in 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 chances in a perfect bracket, so the chances are slim.  For any Wesleyan student looking for a quick penny, filling out a bracket may be worth your while.

March Madness brings out the best in some faculty members as well.  Faculty member Candler Baxley has a tradition in his March habits.  He said, “I am giddy. I have been listening to the Luther Vandross version of “One Shining Moment” for a week now.”  He also talked about his bracket, although it is still a secret since it will win.  He said, “I actually don’t watch a lot of college basketball until the tournament, so I’ll just go with Kansas.”  Clearly, Candler Baxley is ready for the games to begin.  Senior Jordan Mack is also excited for the games to begin.  He said, “I’m excited.  It will be fun to see if my picks are right or not.”  Get ready people of Wesleyan, the games are about to begin and chaos will follow.

The Wesleyan community, as well as the sports loving community around the country, are ready for another crazy month full of Cinderella stories and powerhouse beat-downs.  Tune in to watch the Madness, as it will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Academic Bowl Team Competes on Live TV

in News by
  • High-Q-Final.jpg

By the time you even read this, the question was already answered.  The Academic Bowl team is a small society of some of the brightest and fastest students on campus.  Meeting in secret, the team is a small team of six that is quietly having a very successful season.

The team members are Daniel Baisier, Sameet Singh, Jack Lambert, Matthew Pluck, Max Fernandes and Henry Beltrami.  Led by faculty sponsors Phillip Hart and Matt Crew, the team has lots of opportunities to show the world how smart Wesleyan students really are.

On March 21st, the Wesleyan Academic Bowl team will go back onto live television to compete with other schools in the area.  That will be broadcasted onto WSB, or channel 2 for most.

Student Daniel Baisier is very happy with the season so far.  He said, “The team is actually a lot of fun.  Although it is challenging and mentally exhausting, the knowledge that we have picked up will be beneficial later.  I am excited to get another opportunity to compete on TV.”

This season has been a success this far with a handful of wins.  Although it may seem as if the team would be boring, all team members and faculty sponsors stress the importance of it and recommend participating in future years.

High School: More Than A Grade

in Editorial by

High school, though primarily associated with academia, intrinsically functions as a catalyst for social experimentation, discovery and growth. One could certainly argue that the social ramifications of these four years even surpass those of academic nature. Education at the high school level is intended to cultivate and expand intellectual interests while preparing students for productive careers, but the byproduct of so many teenagers meeting in the same place for hours a day comes in the form of social development that is invaluable to the individual and to society.

Simply put, high school is the place where people really start to figure out who they are and how they interact with other people. Because the social facet of high school education accounts for such a large portion of its overall value, it is exceptionally worth-while for students to evaluate their social habits and interactions in order to ensure that they impact the high school experience positively.

Ultimately, the distinguishing factor between positive and negative social interactions and habits is attitude. By now, most students are sick of being told to change their attitude; adolescents are bombarded by parents, teachers, and just about everyone else telling them to improve their attitude. As monotonous as the message may be, it is so heavily emphasized for good reason. As it relates to social interactions, attitude is central to behavior. A positive attitude inevitably yields healthy, encouraging interactions and conversations. Alternatively, a negative attitude leads to insecurity and petulance. 100 percent of humans would rather find themselves in the presence of an encouraging, selfless person than a cantankerous, irritable bully.

Mean-Girls-Where-NowAlthough many teachers and students are far too susceptible to hypersensitivity, many others refuse to acknowledge the harm they are capable and often guilty of inflicting. The only thing worse than an overly sensitive cry-baby complaining about a harmless joke is a bully who consistently hurts his or her peers without ever admitting to it or receiving retribution. Too often our desire for acceptance exceeds our urge to confront those who put down innocent others. Unfortunately, we are generally afraid to admit that sometimes people actually do hurt our feelings, and sometimes that is enough to do real damage.

I would be remiss if I neglected to mention that this editorial is intrinsically riddled with hypocrisy. Although I am guilty of all of the aforementioned wrongdoings, I can honestly say that high school has taught me to take far more pleasure from encouraging others than hiding my insecurities by putting others down. My favorite thing about the Class of 2016 is that my classmates and I have arrived at the realization that applauding and supporting each other in everything we do produces more joy and excitement than exploiting each other because of our differences. In conclusion, high school is about a lot more than learning. Take a break from stressing about grades every once in a while to evaluate what high school really means for you.
