The Wesleyan Swim team has wrapped their season up with one of the best seasons in school history.

With one of the longest and most strenuous schedules of all Wesleyan Sports, the team had to stay focused and keep faith in their training throughout the season. All the hard training started with “Christmas Practices.” Senior Alex Burke said, “Christmas practices were the most physically demanding practices that I have experienced in a long time. We were in the pool for several hours each morning, working to achieve our goals.”

Primary Elections in Full Swing

in News by

The Primary Election has begun to show Americans where the country may be headed in the next phase of American history. Democrats Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders dueled and campaigned for months in preparation for the Iowa Caucus and New Hampshire Primary. The Republicans have had a few shockers with strong pushes coming from Cruz, Rubio and Bush.

Trump, as expected by many, has been in front thus far. The Primary Election is in full swing now, however, there is still an audience to be swayed to vote. So far in February, Sanders won New Hampshire by a substantial margin, yet lost the Iowa Caucus to Clinton by just a few delegates. Through all the chaos thus far, there have also been a few curveballs that have taken the country by surprise.

Trump won by a landslide in New Hampshire, but the big surprise of the day was who came in second. Kasich, someone who has not had much publicity so far this election, came in second, beating out Cruz, Bush, and Rubio. Kasich did spend lots of time and money in New Hampshire, but he did get second place and set himself up for a good rest of the primary.  As a shock to many, Kasich had a taste of the spotlight in politics, which will help his campaign in the coming months by gaining more voters who had previously not considered him.

The Cincinnati says, “Kasich avoided attacking opponents, although his political action committee aired commercials that criticized his opponents for mudslinging in the form of millions of dollars’ worth of negative commercials.” Chris Christy and Carly Fiorina have both officially dropped out after poor performances, as well as Martin O’Malley on the Democratic side all due to their poor performances in New Hampshire.

With an update on the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton is very unhappy with her campaign thus far, according to Fox News. She has reportedly shaken up and replaced some of her campaign staff due to poor performances. Clinton has to find a way to persuade the minority votes to join her cause because that is the only way that she has a chance of winning.

Most recently, the Nevada and South Carolina elections have concluded and have began to show the beginning of the end for some candidates that were once front runners.  Jeb Bush has dropped out of the race due to poor performances in all of the elections to this point.  Clinton has turned her campaign around, winning Nevada, while Trump won yet another primary in South Carolina.

The Wesleyan community has a great selection of candidates to choose from. For those who are of the legal age to vote, knowledge of what is happening is crucial, as voting in the election is not as easy as clicking on a candidate that has a nice name or a good face. Every vote matters and as Wesleyan students, we have earned the chance to voice our opinions.

On of the most unique, practical and applicable activities at Wesleyan provides a competitive training ground for aspiring attorneys. Mock Trial has consistently drawn ample participation, and it remains a favorite among students. Senior Jack Connors said, “It is thrilling to compete in a real courtroom with actual judges.” Mock Trial competitions are held in real courtrooms where fictitious cases are tried by a real judge. Wesleyan’s team spends as much as three months preparing for competitions, working on every detail of the case.

This year, the team has attained notable success, winning the region competition on Jan. 30 The crew stands poised to dominate again this weekend at the district competition on Saturday, Feb. 27. Led by teachers Matt Crew and Joseph Cooper along with several Wesleyan parents, the team has an abundance of knowledge and experience at their disposal.

The case that was tried during the region competition this year was a second degree burglary charge. The charge was related to the theft of a 20 million dollar painting from an art museum. The prosecution accused the museum curator of assisting in the theft claiming that it had to have been an inside job. Meanwhile, the defense argued that there would be no motive for the curator.

Wesleyan competed against ten other teams in the region competition including GAC. Noteworthy accolades from the competition include two outstanding witness awards for freshman Patterson Beaman, an outstanding lawyer award for senior Mason Borucki and two outstanding lawyer awards for junior Sara Carmichael. The team’s strongest performance came from senior Sarah Borucki who swept the lawyer awards and won best lawyer in every round.

After a remarkable performance at region, the team is working hard to do even better at the district competition. Mason Borucki said, “We are working on minor tweaks that are more technical like tendering evidence and referring to specific laws correctly.” The team hopes to show continued improvement in these areas this weekend.

Mission Trip Retreats Get Students Excited for Trips

in Features by

Life stories, fellowship, and unlimited frozen lasagna are just three amazing aspects of the Wesleyan mission trip retreats. Every year, the Wesleyan mission trip teams take the weekend to go to someone on the team’s mountain or lake house in order for everyone to get to know their team better. This is a very important weekend for teams because it gives everyone a chance to share their faith journey and be themselves without the distraction of school or sports.
This year, the Bulgaria team is going to junior Abbie Lochmandy’s lake house; the Panama girl’s team is going to junior Whitney Archer’s mountain house; the Atlanta team is going to senior Kendall Dearth’s lake house, the Chattanooga team is going to senior Josh Garrard’s lake house; the Guatemala coed trip is going to junior, Emma Preston’s lake house; the Guatemala boys team is going to sophomore Daniel Baisier’s mountain house; the Dominican Republic girls team is going to junior Emily Greer’s lake house; the Dominican Republic boys team is going to junior Jason McCleskey’s lake house, and the Nicaragua team is going to junior Katie Stipe’s lake house.
This year, all of the mission trip retreats were a huge success, and everyone was able to grow closer as a team and get extremely excited for their trips. Junior, Eric Panther, who is going on the Guatemala Co-ed trip said, “It was amazing to see the different personalities mesh into one group who was willing to be vulnerable with each other and share their stories to grow closer as a team.”

If you have been around Wesleyan for more than a week, it is not hard to identify Kendra Morris as an overwhelming favorite among students. Mrs. Morris, the senior class grade chair, has developed a unique relationship with the class of 2016 over the last few years unlike any other teacher. While every teacher has impacted the senior class in their own right, Mrs. Morris has taken on an exceptionally special role to these students.
