March Madness: The Battle of the Best

Annually, the month of March attracts male and female spectators who create brackets and bet against odds for the NCAA’s Men’s Division 1 Basketball Tournament. March Madness features 68 teams who compete against each other until there is a champion. Last year, Villanova beat Michigan to become the 2018 National Champions. Girls’ Basketball Team: Journey to State

After a season full of rebounding, blocking and shooting, the girls’ basketball team’s season ended at the Macon Centreplex on March 6. From October through March, the team invested several hours after school and on weekends improving their basketball skills.

The team officially began their season back in November against Pace Academy and were victorious against them with a win of 64-21. The team was always on the move, as they traveled to different schools for games and tournaments.

Freshman Kaylynn Kirklen said, “My favorite memory from basketball was being in the locker room and dancing with the team before both home and away games.”

Team Bonding: Keeping the “One Body” Theme within Wesleyan Sports

The Varsity boy’s baseball team uses games and activities to bring their team closer together. Head Coach Brian Krehmeyer said, “Our plan differs each year, but activities we have engaged in to build team chemistry includes on-campus scavenger hunts, basketball and volleyball and ping pong tournaments, the challenge of escaping from a break-out room, battles on the Whirly Ball court, laser tag games, paint ball wars, putt-putt golf, and races around Andretti.” It is crucial to establish a close knit bond so the “one body” theme can be exhibited. Junior Griffin Massey said, “We have a tradition of going to Willy’s after every win, they kind of sponsor us.” Traditions that consist of food related activity always brings a group together because of the shared love of a particular thing.

Mikayla Coombs Chosen for McDonald’s All American Team

Since 2002, 24 high school boys and 24 high school girls are chosen to be part of a team filled with the most elite basketball players in Canada and the United States. This year, one of Wesleyan’s own University of Connecticut signee, Mikayla Coombs was chosen to be a part of this elite team. Coombs has been at Wesleyan since seventh grade and has played basketball since. Keep Reading
