Wesleyan Fine Arts in Full Swing Fall 2019

The Wolves’ fall Fine Arts season is packed full of entertainment on the field, in the classrooms and on the stage. Every year Wesleyan Fine Arts surprises its audience with new shows, artwork, music and more, and this year may be the best one yet.

Director of Fine Arts Meg Foster thinks the uniqueness and variety of the programming this year will be full of crowd pleasers, and one new element she is excited about is the fall high school shows, 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse and 10 Ways to Survive The End of the World. “The fall play is back in true one-act form. Last year it was a musical, and this year [it] is two one-act plays put together. It’s going to be a comedy,” Foster said. The inspiration behind this intriguing play was to bring both comedy and a seasonal theme to the fall. The play features zombies and the apocalypse, which is very fitting for its show dates of Oct. 24, 25 and 26. There are approximately thirty students involved in the play, with around three to six lead roles per play. Keep Reading

Christian Life Theme: Stories of the Kingdom

One of the most important parts of Wesleyan is its strong faith and loving community, and this can be seen in each year’s Christian Life Theme. A new Christian Life theme is presented during the first All-School Chapel. Students and faculty always get excited for this big reveal, as the theme gives everyone a new way to look at the scripture and their faith, and it discusses a different aspect of the message each month.

Every Thursday, students attend chapel and listen to a speaker, usually a student or teacher, give a devotion focused on the month’s smaller message and connected to the year’s larger theme. The theme is chosen by Greg Lisson, Wesleyan’s Director of Christian Life, and when asked about it he said, “The theme for this year is Stories of the Kingdom, and the image that we’re using to capture the theme is the image of a tapestry. The quick version of the theme is that each month we’re going to look at different stories from scripture, stories and parables that Jesus told.” Keep Reading

Christian Life Theme: Your Kingdom Come

Every year, Director of Christian Life, Greg Lisson, introduces the new theme at the first All School Chapel of the year. This chapel is filled with many special traditions: senior Evergreens (students that have been at Wesleyan Kindergarten – 12^th grade) walk down the kindergartens, the chapel band is mixed with students from different divisions and many loved ones come to welcome and celebrate in the new school year.

This year, the theme is Your Kingdom Come. Every month, one aspect of the theme will be broken down and focused on by the middle and high school chapel speakers. Topics such as grace, truth, beauty and justice will be filled to complete the phrase. Lisson began the year with Your Kingdom Come. Next month, the topic will be, Your Grace Come.

Lisson shares that the theme was inspired by the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:10. Jesus talks about how he his desire for earth is to have features from similar to ones in Heaven. Lisson said, “All kingdom values and virtues are given to us by God; it is our job to pass His message on to the people around us.”

Freshman Retreat: The Start to a Great School Year

As a Wesleyan tradition, before the start of the school year, the freshman class travels to Carolina Point, North Carolina to get to know their peer leaders and new classmates coming to Wesleyan. This year 26 peer parents, along with high school teachers, traveled with the biggest freshman class to help them make friends while also assuring them that the next four years at Wesleyan will be fun and exciting.

Some of the fun activities the class of 2022 and their peer parents got to do were paddle boarding, go carting, basketball and a big crowd favorite, field day. Freshman Gabby Oakes said, “My favorite thing on the Freshman Retreat was our grade wide shaving cream fight.” In addition to the grade wide activities, peer parents and peer kids enjoyed spending personal time with each other to talk and play games. Senior peer leader Chloe Hangartner said, “My favorite game to play with my peer kids was Psychiatrist.”

Sozo Children’s Choir Brings Joy to Wesleyan

“A child from Uganda, a teenager from the U.S. and an adult from Johns Creek are all part of one humanity under Christ,” said Christian Life Director Greg Lisson. As part of February’s Christian Life theme, “One Humanity,” Wesleyan partnered with the Sozo Ugandan Children’s Choir to bring a unique celebration of diversity to the community.
