A Golden Start to 2020

Just five days after ringing in the New Year, the 77th annual Golden Globe Awards took place in Beverly Hills, Calif. on Jan. 5. This was a memorable event where all of Hollywood’s finest gathered together to be recognized for their monumental accomplishments in the film industry. The awards and achievements of the celebrities were unforgettable, and stars that strutted the red carpet dressed in high-fashion, designer pieces kept heads turning all night long.

Although millions of people in the United States were born on Jan. 15th, only one man has the honor of having the day be dedicated to his life and accomplishments. This man made equality his mantra, made freedom burn in the hearts and minds of all those who suffered from racial oppression and made change his life’s work. This man has earned commendation and respect not only from African Americans, but from people of all colors and races. Lionized in history as a pioneer of the Civil Rights Movement, he was an advocate for non-violent protest and had a dream to see a world where skin color is not the foremost authority. The Golden Globe Awards Ceremony aired on Jan. 7, and was a very significant event for a variety of different reasons. Almost every actor who attended the event wore a Time’s Up badge to support and commemorate their appearance at the awards to those who were victims of sexual harassment. This movement was prompted by the large number of Hollywood actors that have been coming out with stories of being sexually harassed and abused by people in positions of power in the industry. The 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards combined the best of both television and cinema for the 2015-2016 year into one awards show. Comedian Ricky Gervais returned for his fourth hosting gig, and he provided a surprisingly tame and entertaining awards entrance. Having gotten in trouble in the past, Gervais held back on a few jokes that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association would have frowned upon. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a group of journalists responsible for picking the winners of the Golden Globes.
