Cross Country Runs Away with State Title

Winning a state championship in any sport is extremely difficult; the chances of winning one is highly improbable, but the odds of being back- to- back as state champions in any sport is nearly impossible. The amount of hard work, effort and dedication and needed is immense. If a team can complete such a feat, they have undoubtedly proven that they are the best in their sport. This is exactly what the Wesleyan boys’ cross country team proved two weeks ago in Carrollton, GA when they won their second straight state championship. They proved that without a doubt, that they are the best runners that the state of Georgia’s 1-A classification has to offer. They are no longer just a good team, they are a great team. They are champions, and they will go down in history for the phenomenal work they have done.

The road to victory for the team began on Nov. 1 during the high school’s senior night pep-rally. At the beginning of the pep rally, the varsity cross country team was welcomed to the middle of the gym floor and was given a standing ovation for a phenomenal season so far. As the Wesleyan fight song blared and thunderous crowd continuously cheered, the team proceeded to run to the buses to head off to the state meet. Once on the bus, the team began their hour-long drive to Carrollton.

Plastic’s Influence on the Environment

There has been a sudden movement toward the care and awareness of the environment in the United States. Do these people who seemingly care for the environment truly want to help the Earth, or do they do it because of the newly popular “VSCO girl” label?

The effect of plastic and litter on the Earth is huge and needs more awareness. When asked about these effects, biology teacher Megan Trotter said, “I think we are unaware of our plastic [use] in everyday life.” Junior Katherine Graddy also said, “If we continue to ignore the issue of plastic and litter on the Earth, then we will regret it when it’s too late. We only have one planet, so we need to do everything that we can to keep it clean and usable.” Significant movements have been made around the United States to limit plastic usage and waste, causing metal straws, paper straws and other straw alternatives to become more prominent. Keeping Up with Dorian

Tearing through the Bahamas, threatening Georgia and some East Coast states, Hurricane Dorian barreled towards the East Coast at 120 miles per hour. As the strongest storm on record to hit the islands, Dorian posed a strong threat on the U.S., leaving southerners squandering to evacuate the coast. Whether it be family or bonds created on mission trips, members of the Wesleyan community have their hearts deeply invested in the outcome of this vicious storm.

Due to the devastation of this hit, communities were forced to evacuate to keep their families safe. Junior, Katherine Graddy had a piece of her own heart down in Florida with her grandmother and two of her uncles, who have been forced to take very serious, life-preserving precautions. Graddy has expressed from her dialogue with her grandmother in Fort Myers; she said, “The aftermath impacts everyone in Florida. My uncle lives on the West Coast, and he had to cover the windows of his house and quickly evacuate the state. My grandma and other uncle live in Fort Myers, and they had to leave for their safety, even though they weren’t directly in Dorian’s path. Many of my friends in Fort Myers have family all over the state, and even in the Bahamas, and they are having fundraisers in order to rebuild their houses. My old school is having a drive to collect basic necessities for those directly impacted.” The Wesleyan Community has the opportunity to wrap their arms around families who have been personally impacted, as well as use the power of prayer for the people and homes in Florida and the Bahamas.

Students Eat Less Chicken

The Chick-Fil-A in Peachtree Corners closed at the end of Nov., due to remodeling, but is planning to be re-opened in May 2019. The store at 6105 Peachtree Parkway will be torn down, re-serviced and built back up for fresh new look. The new store will have an updated kitchen, seating and modern drive-thru lane. Local employees will be re-located to the nearby Chick-Fil-A location on Holcomb Bridge. Keep Reading
