Atlanta United Explodes in Popularity and Victories

Long overdue for a professional soccer franchise, Atlanta has served as the perfect location for Major League Soccer’s newest expansion club. ESPN Football Club’s Taylor Twellman said, “Atlanta United has single handedly given everyone a look of what Major League Soccer should look like. Stadium? Home Run. Coaching? Home Run. Every single week I look at the schedule and say who is Atlanta United playing because I want to watch them.”

United opened the season in Bobby Dodd stadium, where 55,297 fans attended their first home game. Even though they suffered a 1-2 loss to the New York Red Bulls, they sent a strong message to the league that they would be playoff contenders in their inaugural season. After a delay in construction of the retractable roof pushed back their opener at the new Mercedes Benz-Stadium, FC Dallas played Atlanta United on Sep. 10 in the first ever MLS match at the new stadium. A Leandro Gonzalez goal in the 14th minute got the match underway, and goals from Josef Martínez and Greg Garza sealed a 3-0 victory.

This past 2016-17 school year was one to remember. Take a trip down memory lane as the  Green & Gold staff looks back at some of the most memorable events of the year!
August: The Rio Olympics was a huge success for the United States, with 46 gold medals, 37 silver medals and 38 bronze medals. The 2016 Summer Olympics also featured countless historic and memorable moments such as gymnast Simone Biles’ breakout performace    with the “Final Five” women’s gymnastics team and Michael Phelps’ final Olympic Games and record breaking accumulation of his 23rd gold medal. On Aug. 8, Freshmen and Seniors ventured to Carolina Point for the pre-school Freshman Retreat. New students were introduced to Wesleyan culture and get to know new friends and peer leaders. As the school year winds down and the weather warms up, the spring sports start to come to a close. The multiple spring sport teams that have worked hard all year, finally get to put their skills to the test and reminisce on the season behind them.

With winter activities coming to a close, spring athletes are shaping up for another season of lacrosse, soccer, track and field, golf, baseball and tennis.

The Wesleyan Wolves are already off to a winning season.

Promising Future Lies Ahead for Wolves Soccer Teams

Several weeks into the season, the Wolves continue to dominate on the soccer field; the varsity boys remain undefeated with an impressive record of 8-0-1. With wins against tough competition like Alpharetta, Altanta International School and Discovery, the team is showing outstanding potential so far. The boys only tie came from a difficult game against Marist. Wesleyan has proven to be an offensive powerhouse, scoring 34 goals so far in only nine games.

Despite early success, the Wolves will need to keep progressing in order to compete with region opponents like GAC, Holy Innocents’ and Lovett.

“Our region games will definitely be the toughest, and we’ll need to play well in those to achieve our goal of winning the state championship,” said senior Grant Sauer. Sauer has proven to be an invaluable asset offensively and defensively for the Wolves, and his leadership is key to the success of the team. Keep Reading
