Thirty five out of the thirty-six weeks of the Wesleyan school year are filled with countless assessments, Bible papers and piles of homework; Homecoming Week is the one week out of the year where school becomes a little less serious. It is a time where students trade the uniforms for silly costumes and this year, the school went from a normal high school in Georgia to the red carpet in Hollywood.
After the bell rings marking the end of the 2nd period class on Friday, the student body disperses into their clubs and activities. During this time, students from different grade levels and faculty share time together doing activities they enjoy. English teacher Dawson Zimmerman said, “Club time is the time in my life where I feel most alive.” For Ping-Pong Club sponsor Dustin Wolf, “During club time, thinking stops and doing begins.” This year, there are several returning clubs and activities as well as new clubs that students can join.
This year, Zimmerman is sponsoring the Creative Writing Club, which is a low-commitment club anyone can join. Zimmerman said, “many of our most devout members never even show up.” Whether you are passionate about English or not, “Creative Writing is a club for all people.” Some activities students do is “write creative things, prose and poetry, for no particular reason.” One thing Zimmerman wants students to know is that they “should join this club because we are all meant to write creatively, even if we’re terrible at it.”
The countdown to homecoming has already begun, and this year’s theme is Ancient Civilizations: A Celebration for the Ages.
During Homecoming week, students dress up for different themes each day, and Friday is focused on the Ancient Era. Each grade has a different theme all contributing to the big picture of Ancient Civilizations. On Friday, seniors will become ancient figures and rulers, juniors will transform into the structures and ancient artifacts, sophomores will be the building blocks of society and freshmen will take on the end of an era.
On Saturday Feb. 25, high school students gathered in Chandler Plaza for the annual Sadie Hawkins dance. This year, attendees came dressed in their best Western attire, as the theme was “Kick up the Dust.” Keep Reading
Sadie season is rapidly approaching, which means the tides have officially turned. The guys get to sit back and relax, while the girls take on the role of coming up with ridiculously cheesy puns in order to ask that special someone to the dance.
This girls-ask-boys winter dance has been on Wesleyan’s annual calendar for nine years, thanks to Student Government Advisor and Student Activities Director, Brian Krehmeyer.
Krehmeyer proposed changing Sadie into a winter dance where dates were not encouraged, but the Student Government Staff overruled the vote and decided to keep the Sadie as is.
