From the moment students step on campus, the Wesleyan mission statement is instilled in them through the actions of teachers, administrators and peers. The Community Gives Thanks

in Features by

All around the globe families and friends come together to celebrate each other and give thanks to things that they are grateful for. The “Green and Gold” staff asked students and faculty in the Wesleyan Community about their Thanksgivings, this is what they said.

Abby Johnson said, “I am thankful for coffee frothers, candles that smell like Christmas trees, Taqueria Del Sol, pumpkin muffins, a neighborhood to take walks in, Michael Bublé’s Christmas album, my car and my fiancé Mr. Holmes. Every Thanksgiving, my siblings and I used to play a game of two-hand touch football in the street every Thanksgiving. We also always watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I think my favorite Thanksgiving food has to be this Jell-O dish my mom makes with a pretzel crust; it sounds weird, but it is really good.” Keep Reading

Wolves Grow Out Their Fur

in Features by

Think of your favorite November traditions. What comes to mind? Thanksgiving? Football? Celebrating Christmas at full force even though it’s only been one day since Halloween? There is one tradition that is often shunned and forgotten: No Shave November.

No Shave November is the sacred birthright of men everywhere. It was originally founded in the archaic year of 2009. It was started as a way to raise awareness for cancer, specifically prostate cancer. Each year there are over 150,000 new cases of this disease, and it is not slowing down any time soon. No Shave November is just a small way for an average person to make a difference. Participants in No Shave November are encouraged to donate the money they would spend on grooming products to charity instead. This year’s charities are the Prevent Cancer Foundation, Fight Colorectal Cancer and St. Jude’s Research Hospital.

Although Wesleyan may have stripped away this rite of masculinity from us students during the school year, there is no restriction on students during the summer or teachers year-round. Let’s take a moment to appreciate some of the most bodacious beards Wesleyan has to offer.

Holidays Are a Time for Thankfulness

in Editorial by

The holidays are approaching quickly. With fall comes Thanksgiving, which brings Christmas and then winter. These holidays are no doubt the best time of the year. It is a time for giving and receiving, a time for family and friends. But as we approach this season, many people are discontent. Whether it be about the election or the stress of schoolwork with exams approaching fast.

These factors are creating a dark cloud over Wesleyan. Holidays are a time for happiness and love, but these elements are making it hard to focus on the joy of the holidays. So this holiday season, take a step back and truly look at everything God has given you. God has given us so many gifts to be thankful for. We have a beautiful school with teachers who care about us, loving families, accepting friends and of course delicious holiday food. Everyone goes through rough patches in their lives. We always hear that God uses the dark times in our lives for good, but do we really listen when people say that? We go through bad times for a reason, but God uses every single part of our lives for a reason, even if they seem miserable at the time.thanksgiving-clip-art

Whatever you are going through, look at these holidays as a time to truly be thankful for what God has given you. Looking at the parts of our lives we are thankful for instead of the dark times will inevitably bring joy into our lives. Whatever burden is weighing you down, know that God is here to help us with those burdens. We should not look at these dark times and think that we have to endure them alone. God is here to walk with us through these times.

So this holiday season, focus on the blessings in your life. Do not get weighed down by the sadness in your life. God is here to walk with us through the worst times and we are not on this earth to walk through life alone.
