As the 2019 fall season begins, each fall sport has been preparing and working hard to represent the Wesleyan Wolves well. With fall now in full swing, each team is really kicking it into gear and working hard. The wolves have been showing up to each competition thrown their way and have shown how much effort they have put into their sport. The motivation and dedication of the wolves have been persistent this year, and each team is even more excited for what is to come in the rest of the season.

Water Polo:

The water polo team “3-4-1” is having one of their greatest seasons yet, with three great wins, and one tie. When asked what has led the team to their victories this season so far, Coach Kevin Kadzis said, “The turnaround has been excellent teamwork and player leadership.” The team has played eight exciting games so far and has six more to go. The team is looking forward to the end of the season tournament that is coming up at the end of September. The team this year is composed of many strong senior players who have been really putting in the effort throughout the season so far. These players are Will Miller, Connor Beatty, Jack Godfrey, Isaiah Erb, Samuel Johnson and honorable mention Javi Martinez. These group of players have really stepped up and have given everything they’ve had. Kadzis said, “… what really stands out this season is just the great group of players coming together to play a sport they all like.”

Last school year, Wesleyan School graduated 20 football players and for the Wesleyan Varsity Football team this year, it means a whole different set of players came to play the game. The team currently has played five games, two won and three loss. Having to coach new young players does not intimidate any of the coaches for what lies ahead of the season. Head football coach Franklin Pridgen said, “Each team is always different because kids graduate, and others rise up. That makes it very fun to coach at this level. A new senior class every year always puts their stamp on our season.”

Last season, Wesleyan football had a seemingly straightforward goal: Go to the Dome and win. This season, the same goal remains.

2008 marked the last time Wesleyan football held up the State Championship trophy. Last season, a move to Class A private opened the door to a state championship run. However, the Wolves were stopped short of their goal in the Elite Eight by eventual state champions Eagles Landing Christian Academy. While the Wolves undoubtedly had the skill, heart and game plan to succeed, they were simply outmatched by ELCA that night. The Wolves are certainly looking forward for their Sept. 29 rematch against the Chargers.

In the off season, the team worked extremely hard to gain the weight and physical strength necessary to compete at the highest levels. Coach Dustin Wolf gave players a SAGE lunch guide which helped them gain the necessary nutrients, protein and calories to gain muscle, while still maintaining their agility. He said it was important that the team had a “commitment to training in the spring off-season that started in January.”

It is that time of year again; Friday night lights has returned. Students, teachers and parents eagerly anticipate returning to Henderson Stadium to cheer on the wolves. Wesleyan’s football program is a major aspect of school life every fall, not only for the players and coaches, but also for the fans. From the Kickoff Dinner, to the Homecoming game and everything in between, the Wolves never fail to show up to support the team.
