Nations All Over the World Coming Together to Celebrate Pride for Their Countries

From the Olympic trials to the torch relays, the opening ceremonies, the Games and finally to the closing ceremonies, the Olympic Games are a world-wide event that bring a competitive spirit to the world along with uniting the world through this competition. The 14-day games consist of various winter sports including curling, snowboarding, speed skating, ice hockey, figure skating and many more. The 2018 Winter Olympics will be held in PyeongChang, South Korea (about two hours away from Seoul). The event’s estimated cost is only $10 billion. While that seems expensive, in comparison to the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games, it is five times less expensive. Keep Reading

The Golden Globe Awards Ceremony aired on Jan. 7, and was a very significant event for a variety of different reasons. Almost every actor who attended the event wore a Time’s Up badge to support and commemorate their appearance at the awards to those who were victims of sexual harassment. This movement was prompted by the large number of Hollywood actors that have been coming out with stories of being sexually harassed and abused by people in positions of power in the industry. For technology specialist and veteran Cristian Piedra, nothing says “thank you” to American heroes like 1,500 members of the Wesleyan community gathered in Yancey Gymnasium to celebrate Veterans Day. “We don’t ask for anything as servicemen, and the fact that we are recognized and celebrated is more than enough.”

Whether it be through soccer, economics or relations between the people, the Catalonian Secession is having a profound impact on the country of Spain. The Catalonians are demanding independence from Spain and will settle for nothing less than complete secession from their mother country.

Catalonia is a region of Spain that runs itself autonomously with their own government called the Generalitat de Catalunya. Catalonians have never really considered themselves to be a part of Spain. For many years, Catalonia and Spain were separate countries, but in 1714, the Spanish defeated Catalonia in the War of the Spanish Succession, which resulted in modern-day Spain. When democracy regained power after General Francisco Franco, Catalonia was granted some autonomy in 1977.
