Taking a Peek into Wesleyan’s Winter Sports

The Wesleyan Winter Wolves are currently nearing the end of their respective seasons. With swimming, basketball and wrestling nearing a close, athletes share their hopes for the remainder of their seasons.

Freshman swimmer, Hannah Wasmuth, has set specific goals to achieve in before the state meet at Georgia Tech. “Before going to Georgia Tech, I want to improve on my technique, so I can be at my best for the state meet,” Wasmuth said. Many other swimmers attended challenging practices over the Christmas break. “No days off!” swimmers said.

Out of the water, the varsity girls’ basketball team has also been preparing for their state tournament. “Our team is feeling really good about our accomplishments this season,” sophomore Caroline Burke said. “That being said, we have some tough competition ahead of us, so we have to keep working hard,” said Burke. Coach Wolf Gets Wesleyan Athletes into Shape

While winter season sports are coming to an end, the spring conditioning is just beginning with Coach Dustin Wolf. Coach Wolf pushes all of his athletes to train well, so they are able to play well.

Wolf’s mission is to help each sport reach its full potential during game time. Sophomore basketball player Callie Weaver said that, “I think it’s worthwhile because I can see a difference in my game in the winter through my strength and stability, and I think you can see it in the whole team too.” Keep Reading

Newest Members Inducted to the Circle of Honor

The Circle of Honor is a program that Wesleyan created in 2007 to recognize former Wesleyan athletes who made significant contributions to the athletic program while they were students at the school. Recognized as one of the highest honors, only a few people are inducted each year. In a recent interview, Head Athletic Director, Marc Khedouri, said, “[Throughout high school] a lot of students did a lot of really important things that are worthy of recognition and [they] accomplished a lot [too]. There is a character component to [this honor] as well, so we are not just recognizing students who were good athletically. [Instead], we are recognizing students of high character who were also good athletically.”

History Bowl Premieres with Instant Success

Wesleyan caters to its audience in the aspect of extracurricular activities, and with the new addition of the History Bowl, its résumé is only growing.

With its focus on historical questions, History Bowl is a year-long, nation-wide, inter-school league with competitions all throughout the schoolyear. The first competition was in November, but three more will take place over the next six months: a regular competition in January, state in March and nationals in April.

The Wesleyan team, led by Ted Russell, was able to attend the November competition. Despite being its first year participating in History Bowl, the school performed very well. Junior Jack Lambert said, “We had quarterfinal and semifinal Varsity finishes and JV won the whole tournament.”

Girls’ Basketball Chases Another State Championship Title

The girls’ basketball team is officially on its way to the state championship again. The players have worked extremely hard in the off-season and are hopeful that their hard work will pay off in the season. This year, the team has the most seniors in the history of the program, with eight. Three out of four of these seniors are already committed to continue their basketball careers at the collegiate level. Senior Natalie Armstrong is committed to play at Samford University, senior Mikayla Coombs is committed to play at the University of Connecticut and senior Bailey Edwards is committed to play at Young Harris College.

With the most seniors ever, the team is hoping to end their season with yet another State Champion title. The team is extremely large this year with 17 players, which is even more than last year’s 14 players. The team is made up of four freshmen, three sophomores, two juniors and eight seniors.

Senior Mikayla Coombs said, “I am excited about the memories we will make as a team and the big games.” Coombs also said, “My favorite part of the team is the bond we have. We are all extremely close and we are sad that this is our last season together.”

The toughest competition in region six will be Holy Innocents yet again. After losing to Holy Innocents in the state championship last year, the lady wolves will have to play their hardest to beat them and make it to another state championship.

Coach Jan Azar said, “I am most excited for coaching my eight seniors for one more year!”

The seniors have all been playing together for all of high school, and this year will be a bitter-sweet end to their high school careers.
