Some adults would say senioritis is just an alternative term for laziness, but it is real, and it plagues the current senior class.
Brian Morgan, Wesleyan’s Director of Technology and father of senior Rachel Morgan, understands the struggle of senioritis.
“Senioritis is definitely real. Rachel is in bed at 9 every night,” Morgan said.
Senioritis is an illness that causes a decrease in motivation, and therefore effort in students due to limited time left in the school year. For most, this disease does not hit until second semester of senior year, but for a few, it started the day they arrived on campus this year.
For the majority of students, the lack of motivation comes because they have limited time left in the semester. Most people have been accepted into the colleges they applied to and because of this, it becomes extremely difficult to focus on school.
Senior Sam Laurite said, “I got into Wake Forest first semester. I do not have motivation this semester because of it. I never study, so I sleep, and now I get bad grades.”
Seniorities and procrastination go hand in hand. As the school year goes on, students begin to push off work to the night before, and then to the day of. A survey was conducted to see the results of senioritis on the current Wesleyan senior class. The majority of Wesleyan seniors are giving half of their effort or less.
Senior Nicole Fasciana said, “I don’t even take my backpack out of the car anymore.”
Many other students struggle to do work at home. Only 8% of Wesleyan seniors study two nights ahead of time, and 35% of seniors study the day of the test. The increase in procrastination has caused grades to drop significantly for 35% of the class.
Senior Hayes Laughlin “plays games in all of his classes” along with many other students in the senior class. The combination of not paying attention in class and not preparing for assessments is most likely the cause of grade decline.
Some seniors still have to give effort in classes because they have not been accepted into all their schools yet. Some schools take second semester grades into account when deciding who to admit into their university. Even these students are struggling to focus with graduation on the horizon. Senior have less than 100 days of school left, and the final rhythmic ring of the bell cannot come fast enough.
The boys` basketball season came to a close with the final record being 17-12. The boys worked hard to finish out the season strong and ended their journey in the second round of state.
When asked what the most exciting game of the season was, Junior Christian Mclean said, “I think the most exciting game this year for us was the second time we played Holy Innocents` because they knocked us out of the playoffs last year, so it meant a lot to go out there and beat them by 20, and also sent a statement to a lot of other teams as well.” The boys played Holy Innocents` two times, the first time they lost barely 63-67 and the second time they won by twenty points.
Damm said, “My favorite game of the season so far was our game against Green Forest. We played at home and were huge underdogs, but the crowd in Yancey was amazing and our team went out and played hard and left it all on the court. We didn’t win, but we gave a winning effort against a very talented Green Forest team. It is a game I’ll always remember.”
Built into the basketball schedule are games that are out of region. These games are shown to be more difficult. Senior Cullen Davis said, “Playing tough games is very helpful when it comes to preparing for the playoffs, because there are no give me games in the playoffs. Every team is capable of winning any given game and being in tough situations early in the year is great preparation for that.”
The Boys recently lost to Lakeview on Feb. 23, which brought their season to a close.
Despite spending one hour every day, five days a week for nine months out of the year with their teachers, many students do not have an opportunity to really get to know them. With the addition of Teacher Spotlight to the Green and Gold, students are able to learn more about their teachers within a matter of minutes.
Mission trips, the staple of Wesleyan spring breaks, are quickly approaching. With these trips coming up, mission retreats are put in place to allow teams to really get to know each other before their trip. This year, Wesleyan is sending out ten different mission teams: nine during spring break and one, South Africa, during the summer.
Before they depart on their trips, the teams get to know each other better and bond as a team with a retreat. The purpose of the mission retreats is to “allow the teams to get away from the hustle and bustle of Wesleyan, from sports, from home and have a focused 24 hour period of time together to grow into a team,” said Amelia Davis, Dean of Student Ministries.
