Lent: A Reminder to Become Christ-Centered

Just as there is a time to celebrate Jesus’ birth during Christmas, Christians set aside time to honor Christ’s death during a time of fasting, known as Lent. Lent comes from the term “lenten” which is a part of the historical Christian calendar and is a practicing of opening the hearts of Christians to hear God’s grace through prayer, confession, fasting and tithing as the church waits for Holy Week. Lent lasts for forty days, modeling after the forty days Jesus fasted in the desert before his capture and death. Today Lent is practiced formally and informally around the world to proclaim peoples’ faith or to celebrate a new habit forming (i.e. no soda or candy for forty days) and to be aware of what Jesus has done for us. On Aug. 21, all of Wesleyan School gathered in Henderson Stadium to watch the Great American Eclipse.

“The eclipse provide[d] us with a terrific opportunity to witness the beauty of God’s creation and the mystery of His handiwork,” said Headmaster Chris Cleveland.

Science department chair Anna Myrick said, “People were most fascinated by how such a tiny sliver of Sun could still create so much light for us. This is a reminder that the smallest acts of kindness and good deeds can spread the light of God’s Kingdom to so many.”

When asked what experiencing the eclipse would entail, Myrick said, “You will see the Moon cross in front of the Sun. The sky will dim by around 90% and drop about five degrees in temperature. There could be a cool breeze, an ‘eclipse wind.’ Shadows will be altered and the darkness will begin in the western sky. We could see Venus as a star (in the Western sky) and Jupiter (in the Eastern Sky). The darkest areas will be in the northern part of the sky where totality is occurring.” Keep Reading

Sadie season is rapidly approaching, which means the tides have officially turned. The guys get to sit back and relax, while the girls take on the role of coming up with ridiculously cheesy puns in order to ask that special someone to the dance.

This girls-ask-boys winter dance has been on Wesleyan’s annual calendar for nine years, thanks to Student Government Advisor and Student Activities Director, Brian Krehmeyer.

Krehmeyer proposed changing Sadie into a winter dance where dates were not encouraged, but the Student Government Staff overruled the vote and decided to keep the Sadie as is.
