Social Media and its Effects on Everyday Life

Throughout the years, social media has become an influential part of everyday lives, especially today in 2019. Although social media has many positives that allow people to stay connected, it has many negatives effects as well. Over a short time period, there was a big growth in use of social media platforms.

Certain platforms have been prevalent throughout the years, such as Facebook and Instagram. While others such as LinkedIn and My Space are not very popular or relevant anymore. Recently, certain platforms have become very popular such as Snapchat and TikTok that are enjoyed by a range of ages. While each platform is entertaining in its own way, many people have opinions on how the use of social media affects their lives.

Wesleyan Fantasy Football Leagues

As the fall season rolls around, and football season begins ramping up, people are getting excited for their Fantasy Football League by picking out their team name and thinking about who they want to draft. There are tons of Fantasy Football Leagues around the country, and there are also many leagues in the Wesleyan Community. Junior Bryce Masters, senior Carter Davis and Wesleyan parent Stephanie Powell are all part of a Fantasy Football League this year.

Bryce Masters:

Junior Bryce Masters and his friends, Luke Carroll, Tanner Bivins, Matthew Morse, Hayden Morehouse, Beau Brown, Braden DeBow, Wyatt Hodges and JD Chipman are all part of a Fantasy Football League together this year. They have been preparing for this time of year to come and were eagerly ready to make their draft picks for this year’s league. For the drafting, they met up at Beau Brown’s house. Masters is projected to win the league so far, and some other dominant players in league are juniors Harrison Gracey and Beau Brown, but the season is not over quite yet. When asked if he thinks Fantasy Football is luck or talent, Masters said, “Mostly talent, with a little bit of luck involved. An important key is doing research before-hand and doing a few mock drafts.” When the time comes, the winner will get $135, second place $45 and third place $20. But now, what about the loser? The loser must go to Waffle House for 12 hours and must eat a waffle every single hour. Fantasy Football is one of Masters’ favorite past times in the fall, and he said his favorite parts about it are, “Watching NFL football, and it is also a fun little competition.” Keep Reading

Pumpkin Spice Season is Here, Better “Latte” than Never

Since it is officially fall, it is time to celebrate all aspects that make the season so special. It is the little aspects, from snacks to scents to drinks, that make the season so highly anticipated. The high school was sent out a six-question survey to help find out what everyone enjoys most about fall and the survey helped remind students about what to look forward to now that fall is here.

The student body was first asked about favorite fall scents, and 39 percent of students voted for pumpkin spice. One of those responses was from sophomore Mackenzie Madison. When asked why she thinks everyone loves pumpkin spice, she said, “When I think of fall, one of the first things that come to mind would be pumpkin spice.” The first question had a clear winner, but the next question about favorite Halloween movies had answers that were almost tied. The winner, beating “Halloweentown” by one vote, was “Ghostbusters.” Junior Reid Cameron said, “‘Ghostbusters’ was my favorite movie growing up, and it is a classic that I still love.” This was a shocking result considering “Hallowentown” is a movie series our generation grew up watching, but like Cameron said, “Ghostbusters” is a timeless movie that will forever be a favorite.

The next question was about favorite seasonal fall candies, and this resulted in a close toss-up between candy corn and Pumpkin Reese’s. However, the winner ending up being Pumpkin Reese’s. Just like fall candies, seasonal snacks are sold for a small portion of the year, so once they come, they are gone. The high school student’s favorite snack, winning by a landslide, was pumpkin bread. When asked which pumpkin bread she preferred, homemade or store-bought, senior Avery Beall said, “Homemade pumpkin bread is better because it’s fresher than store-bought and homemade everything is better.”

Wesleyan’s Mission Trip Team Serves in South Africa

The Wesleyan Mission Trip team has been serving in South Africa for years and each year the trip impacts even more people than before. This year’s team, led by Mr. Lisson, Dr. Pinkett-Smith, Mrs. Hemken, Mr. Russell and Ms. Stephenson, traveled from Atlanta to Johannesburg for a two week trip filled with service.

When they arrived in Johannesburg, they stayed at an organization called Impact Africa, which provides ministry and creates jobs for local South Africans. From the start, they knew their trip was going to be extremely beneficial both for them and the people they were serving.

The many activities and worship sessions kept the team busy for the whole trip. While in Johannesburg, the team walked through townships, shared the gospel with people, played with different groups of preschool children and run two days of Vacation Bible School. Many students’ favorite moments came from their time at VBS. Junior Sydney Stirling said, “Doing VBS for the community was definitely a high point from my trip, and I will never forget the joy I brought to them.” Lisson said, “I think the highlight for me was a worship night we had on Wednesday night. It was the first moment I realized just how far we had come in the few days we had been together.”
