College Football: Who Will Come Out On Top?

in Sports by

The beginning of school always brings the exciting factor of good ol’ college football. The 2017-18 football season is a fresh start for every team, and fans can look forward to the start of the season with new schedules and new rankings for their teams.

Even though it is still early in the season for all teams, already some predictions have been made for who will be in the college football playoffs. Prior to the start of the season, experts predicted: #1 Alabama over #4 Ohio State; #2 Clemson over #3 Washington. This would then leave Alabama and Clemson, with the prediction of Alabama beating Clemson in the national championship game. Last year the Tigers pulled off a 35-31 win against the University of Alabama to end their season. A potential rematch would be a fan favorite because it would take the same two teams from last year’s national championship game and stir up a rematch with the Crimson Tide coming out on top.

As spring approaches, another important season falls upon us: Girl Scout season. Their beloved cookies are being sold by cute, little Girl Scouts in front of the market or knocking on your door. The cookies themselves are almost impossible to resist, but when you add in the smiling little face, it becomes virtually impossible to turn down a box of Girl Scout Cookies. Keep Reading

The Boys` Basketball Season Comes to a Close

in Sports by

The boys` basketball season came to a close with the final record being 17-12. The boys worked hard to finish out the season strong and ended their journey in the second round of state.

When asked what the most exciting game of the season was, Junior Christian Mclean said, “I think the most exciting game this year for us was the second time we played Holy Innocents` because they knocked us out of the playoffs last year, so it meant a lot to go out there and beat them by 20, and also sent a statement to a lot of other teams as well.” The boys played Holy Innocents` two times, the first time they lost barely 63-67 and the second time they won by twenty points.

Damm said, “My favorite game of the season so far was our game against Green Forest.  We played at home and were huge underdogs, but the crowd in Yancey was amazing and our team went out and played hard and left it all on the court.  We didn’t win, but we gave a winning effort against a very talented Green Forest team. It is a game I’ll always remember.”

Built into the basketball schedule are games that are out of region. These games are shown to be more difficult. Senior Cullen Davis said, “Playing tough games is very helpful when it comes to preparing for the playoffs, because there are no give me games in the playoffs. Every team is capable of winning any given game and being in tough situations early in the year is great preparation for that.”

The Boys recently lost to Lakeview on Feb. 23, which brought their season to a close.

Tennis Teams Start the Season Off Right

in Sports by

Roger Federer and Serena Williams have nothing on Sophia Strickland, Cullen Davis and the rest of our tennis all-stars. The Wesleyan girls and boys tennis teams are working hard this year to make a good run in the State Championship.

After coming off a win in the State Championship last year, the girls tennis team is putting in time and effort in order to once again get their shot at state. Junior, Lauren Alexander, said that her favorite part about playing tennis at Wesleyan is spending time with the team and being able to grow closer.

“My personal goal is to consistently perform for my team so that they can have confidence during their matches,” Alexander said.

Senior, Sophia Strickland, said that Lovett is going to be their toughest opponent this year, but they have already beaten Lovett 3-2, so that is a good sign for the rest of the season. Strickland has been playing tennis for ten years, and this fall, she will be continuing her tennis career at Johns Hopkins University.

The boys tennis team is also working hard to be a contender in the State Championship this year. Junior, Cullen Davis, said that his favorite part about playing tennis at Wesleyan is all of the great facilities that Wesleyan offers for the sport.

Like Strickland, Davis also said that the team’s toughest opponent this year will be Lovett. When asked about a team goal for this year, Davis said, “I would say that a good team goal for this season would be to make the state tournament. Our region is very tough this year and to make the state tournament after coming out of this region would be a very big accomplishment.”
